Key details for booking a Sport-fishing trip in San Diego
Apr 21, 2024
When you're going to book a sport-fishing trip, there are many factors to take into consideration.
Here is what you should look for when you're booking a deep sea fishing charter in San Diego, California:
How much bait does the boat hold?
In San Diego we use live sardines as our bait of choice for most pelagic fish. He who holds the most bait catches the most fish.
How fast does the boat cruise when the weather is snotty and what is your weather cancellation policy?
Weather plays a huge part in how much fishing time you’ll actually have. Most 4-6 pack boats will cruise around 22-27 MPH when it’s nice out and 12-20MPH when it’s rough. Some operations do not offer refunds for weather.
Is there a maximum distance from the marina that we will fish?
Some operations limit the amount of fuel burned to maximize profits. If the fish are outside their range, you’re out of luck.
What types of fish cleaning/ processing is available?
Most operations include fish filleting in the price. This is limited to the captain or crew filleting and placing the meat in a ziplock bag.
Fish processing, on the other hand, is where the fish is taken to a processor who fillets and vacuum seals your fish; typically in 1-2 pound pieces. If you have a lot of fish, a processor is the way to go. You’ll be able to freeze your fish and enjoy it up to a year later.
What fishing gear is included and what brand is it?32
These are all good questions to ask before booking your trip as a bare bones basic off shore setup will run you about $350 on the cheap end. One follow-up question; do you need left- handed reels? Not all boats carry them!
Quality gear enhances the chances of successful catches, leaving clients satisfied with their excursion. It also reflects positively on the charter company's reputation, attracting more business through word-of-mouth recommendations. Ultimately, investing in top-notch equipment demonstrates a commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction.
Here does MAVRIK SPORTFISHING compare?
Our 34' Freeman carries 6-8 scoops of sardines compared to an average of 2-3 scoops on a 23-28’ Parker. We cruise fully loaded down around 45mph when it’s nice and around 30mph when it’s not so nice. If the weather doesn’t look safe and you’re not able to return another day, we offer a full refund. We will fish up to 100 miles off shore on a full day charter. We offer fish cleaning and fish processing with our good friends at California Fish Processing (let us know ahead of time what you’d like to do and we will reserve a spot for you). We use top of the line reels from Daiwa along with their Proteus rods. We also provide all line, lures, hooks, weights, bait, etc.
